The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)
Action | Thriller
The Bourne Identity shocked many people. Matt Damon became a household name after his Oscar win for Good Will Hunting, but that name was tied solely to dramatic work. Few pictured him as mind-fractured assassin Jason Bourne, made famous by the Robert Ludlum novels. His performance and the fantastic film proved naysayers wrong, and the follow-up The Bourne Supremacy kept the adrenaline rushing. Yet as good as those films are, The Bourne Ultimatum is undoubtedly the best of the trilogy.
Bourne is an endlessly captivating character, largely due to his memory loss. After two films exploring his past, Ultimatum finally reveals the truth, providing some closure for our tortured hero. This wouldnât matter if director Paul Greengrass wasnât as interested in Bourneâs pathos as he is his brawn. Every thrilling set-piece is bookended with tangible human drama. This striking combination of physicality and vulnerability make Bourne fascinating, and Damon plays him so well, itâs impossible to imagine someone else doing it.
Ultimatum is often hailed as one of the best action films ever made, but why is that? The obvious answer is that the film never lets up. From scene one, youâre on the ride. Bourne grappling with Desh, the thrilling rooftop chase, the race through Manhattanâs streets: itâs amazing stuff! But weâre thrilled because, in between these big moments, Greengrass explores our heroâs motivation, his pain, his anger. Because Bourne is such a compelling character, weâre invested when heâs jumping across balconies.
The Bourne Ultimatum is a fiercely enjoyable popcorn action film, but thanks to smart filmmaking, it reaches touching dramatic heights rarely seen in films of its kind. I couldnât be more excited for the next chapter.
